Faith is not a Virtue

Religious beliefs are just opinions. They are almost akin to taste in music, politics, literature and so on. I don’t get why theists feel that faith should be held to such a high esteem. Absolute belief in something without real evidence would not suffice in any other area of life. You must do a whole lot of mental compartmentalizing in order to really believe your religious mythology. You must ignore the laws of science and logic and swallow all the fairytale that your religion forces down your throat.

Think of it this way: do you lend any credence to the supernatural claims of other religions? Why don’t you? They are just as credible as the ones claimed in your holy book. You might not notice this because you were indoctrinated when you were young or emotionally vulnerable, but casual research will reveal this to be true. You may have studied Greek and Roman mythology in school and thought that it was stupid for anyone to have believed those myths. Just wait. Someday children will be reading about Christian, Islamic, Jewish mythology and find it hard to believe anyone actually believed in those ancient myths.

All the major religions we have today are only the cults that have survived. These are the mythologies that have convinced people of their truthfulness. But, someday they will no longer be believed by anybody just like those of the Egyptians, Greeks, Aztecs, and so on.  So,  churches, synagogues, temples will eventually fall into disuse like other ancient temples or be converted to be used for secular purposes or even for new religions.

So, it comes down to this: I do not have to respect your faith or religious beliefs. You can have your personal myths and keep them to yourself. But, when you spout your dogma like it is absolute truth from a divine origin you can expect rational and logical people to criticize you and your religion. It doesn’t matter how much importance religion plays in your life, your religious beliefs are only opinions; and baseless ones for that matter.

There is no human right that protects your faith from criticism (unless you live in a fundamentalist state). My freedom of speech will always trump your false belief of having the right to not have your religious beliefs offended. So, the bottom line is that your religious beliefs should not be privileged over other areas of discourse.
