Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot

hitler stalin pol pot 300x128 Hitler, Stalin, and Pol PotDid these men kill in the name of atheism? Is it even possible to do that? Even a small amount of common sense will tell you that it isn’t. There is nothing about atheism, disbelief in God, that will lead a person to mass murder. On the other hand, there is a lot in religion that can lead a person to commit heinous crimes. I will accept that Stalin and Pol Pot were atheists, but Hitler was a Catholic. And it was his Christian heritage which partly motivated him towards his hatred of Jews.

But, even if Hitler was an atheist no connection can be made between mass murder and atheism. These men wanted absolute power for themselves. And they destroyed all opposition to get it, whether it be the Church, intellectuals, political dissidents etc. But, they did not actually destroy religion. Rather, they substituted their own. They created cults of personality and made themselves gods. And they created new sets of doctrine and dogma for people to follow.

This goes to show you that all religions are bad, whether they are spiritual or political. And anyone who uses this argument of atheism being responsible for more deaths than Christianity because of Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot being atheists is merely ignorant of history or being intellectually dishonest.

  1. D.M.D. says:

Absolutely true, Andrew. I have no idea where that idea that Hitler was an atheist comes from. But every time Christians brandish that “atheism caused more deaths than religions”, they conveniently omit the true link between these historical figures: dictatorship/fascism. THAT is what caused so many deaths. Not atheism.

Besides, what they refuse to see either, is that the cult of personality, common to these men, finds its roots precisely in… belief systems. All three had a perfect model/manual in the dusty book of fairy tales.

If one really wants to be honest and consider History, what political system someone like God would fit into? Totalitarianism, in each and every sense of the word. Period.

It might be slightly less grandiose than Stalin and Hitler’s insane demonstrations, but what’s really different with the Vatican? Most certainly a higher dose of hypocrisy and cowardice, I think, but not much more.
